September 10th, 2011Audi A2 And BMW 1-Series: Old And New Hatchback Models, Advantages And Drawbacks
The Audi A2 is a super mini multi-purpose family car manufactured during the period of 1999-2005. The most distinctive feature of this hatchback was its aluminium body. Despite it superlight weight (less than one ton) and super low fuel consumption (less than 3 L per 100 km for the ā3Lā diesel engine version) the customers were not impressed by the avant-garde design or satisfied with the price level. Thus the sales level became extremely low and the manufacturer decided to stop the model production.
However at the Frankfurt Moto Show this September the new Audi A2 was unveiled as an electric concept car expected on sale in 2014.
The BMW 1 series appeared in the auto market in 2004 and is in production up to now. The series is considered a small family automobile.
There are following types of hatchbacks manufactured within the 1-series:
ļ§ 5-door hatchback:
- BMW E87 launched in 2004
- A brand new BMW F20 shown at the Goodwood Moving Motor Show in June, 2011
ļ§ 3-door hatchback (BMW E81) launched in 2007
The BMW 1 series hatchbacks are featured by a rear wheel drive. The new 2011 version is characterized by the low emission and extra legroom for rear seats as well as efficient fuel economy, though among the drawbacks the experts outline still insufficient load space and average interior comfort for passengers.
